Redemption Hill is led by a team of elders who are responsible for the care, protection, and maturation of the church. Despite the images and associations that come to mind when you hear the word “elder”, in the Scriptures, “pastor”, “elder” and “overseer” are used synonymously.
Our elders are all pastors called by God to shepherd and lead this local expression of God’s church. According to Hebrews 13:17, they will have to give an account for those in their charge. To this end, they meet regularly to ensure they protect, lead, and nurture the church to the glory of God.
That being said, the Scriptures are also clear that Jesus Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:9, 1:22-23, 4:15, 5:23). Jesus is the One who plants a church (Hebrews 3:1). Jesus is the Leader who builds the church (Matthew 16:18). Jesus is the Senior Pastor who rules the church (1 Peter 5:4). And it is ultimately Jesus who closes churches down when they have become faithless or fruitless (Revelation 2:5). Therefore, it is absolutely vital that a church loves Jesus, obeys Jesus, imitates Jesus, and follows Jesus at all times and in all ways, according to the teaching of His Word (Colossians 3:16). Therefore, human leadership in the church is little more than qualified Christians who are following Jesus and encouraging other people to follow them as they follow Jesus.
Being an elder is a calling that bears tremendous responsibility, so it is not taken lightly. According to the Bible, an elder is a man who has been called by God to this role. Each elder will go through a period of study, prayer, and meetings with the present elders. He will also be brought before the church, allowing any concerns to be voiced to the present elders before that man is ordained. Ordination at Redemption Hill follows the Biblical norm: the present elders lay hands on him and pray, stating to the church that God has called this person to be an elder at Redemption Hill, and we are coming alongside him in ministry and life. In addition to the elders of Redemption Hill, we have several support and ministry staff who, under the oversight of the elders, manage and lead various aspects of Redemption Hill. This includes things like music & arts, business operations, RH Kids, facilities management, etc.
