Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery | Grace Unmeasured

Come behold the wondrous mystery: Christ the Lord upon the tree;
In the stead of ruined sinners hangs the Lamb in victory.
See the price of our redemption; see the Father’s plan unfold,
Bringing many sons to glory, grace unmeasured, love untold!
– Third verse of Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery by Matt Boswell, Michael Bleecker, and Matt Papa

Maybe you’ve noticed, but we can see the pattern of the entire redemption story woven throughout Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery. In verse 1 we saw the mystery of the pre-incarnate Jesus: God, who is the King of Heaven’s Praises, who condescended to this earth robed in flesh in order to save sinners. In verse 2 we saw the mystery of Jesus as the Son of Man who, as a human, experiences our sufferings and weaknesses and was yet without sin, and who lived a perfect life in our place, fulfilling God’s laws. This week we come to perhaps the greatest mystery of Jesus, the climax of His coming to this earth and living in our place: namely His death.

Verse three begins by pointing us to the mystery of the cross – the greatest demonstration of God’s love and God’s justice. And Here is the mystery, God’s love for sinners is on the fullest display at the same time that God’s justice is fully satisfied for sinners. How does this happen? How is God able to pour out love on the same ones that He should pour out justice upon? The answer: Jesus – the spotless sacrificial Lamb who hangs there in OUR place. When we should be defeated as ruined and desolate sinners, God sends Himself to accomplish the victory we could not accomplish for ourselves.

This morning, Continue to look, with your mind’s eye and with your heart, to the mystery of this cross. See the nails which pierce the hands and feet of Jesus, see the scars that He bears upon His body, see the physical pain and the agony that bears down upon Him, but even more, see the full weight of the punishment for our sin crush the Son of God. See the price of our redemption! “We were not ransomed with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with blood – the precious blood of Christ – like that of a Lamb without spot or blemish. And this is no small event. This is no simple act of heroism by a good man. This is the main event on the stage of the universe – this is the Father’s predetermined plan from before the foundation of the world mysteriously unfolding for His glory and our joy!

Sing this morning as you trust in the mystery of the cross. Sing with joy as you see how the Father has shown the immeasurable riches of His grace in accomplishing His plan to bring His children to Himself forever. Trust in His infinite love for you which can never be exhausted and can never be quenched. Nothing can separate us from this love. Nothing can sever us from this grace. This is all because of Jesus, the Son of God who died in our place for our sins so that we might enjoy God forever. Behold this wondrous mystery!
