The Gospel Deeps

The following is entitled The Gospel Deeps: The Gospel Reconciles Us On Multiple Levels, from Gospel Deeps: Reveling in the Excellencies of Jesus by Jared C. Wilson:

The gospel reconciles us as individuals to God, and it reconciles us as individuals to each other, but God’s plan in this reconciling work is bigger and broader than even those blessed effects. God is not just concerned with making us different people but making us a people. What I mean is, it is not just that God wants you and me to be kind and gentle and forgiving and obedient; he wants us to be kind and gentle and forgiving and obedient together, because the plan he has designed to most display his glory in the reflected image of his Son is not saved individuals but a saved church. Paul puts it this way:

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. – Ephesians 2:19-22

We are being sanctified as individuals, to be sure, but part of this sanctifying work of the Spirit is the reconciliation of ourselves to each other, which is an effect of the Spirit’s reconciling us together to God as the spotless bride of Jesus Christ. We “are being built together” into a unified temple, a household of God. As Christians we reflect a “little Christ”-ness, but as the church we reflect the body of Christ.

Here at Redemption Hill, we believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not just the ABCs of the Christian life, but the A to Z. We believe that the gospel is for all of life, not just the moment of conversion. As Wilson goes on to say in his book: “The gospel’s saving work is deep work. It is deep tissue massage, spiritual reparative therapy, and radical reconstructive surgery.” This is where Redemption Hill Communities play a vital role in the life of our local body of believers. Community is where we dig deeper into our redemption and mine out the riches of the gospel. Community is where we go deeper into our relationships. Community is where we can let the gospel go deeper into our souls to bring about the transformation and joy that we all desperately long for and that Jesus died for us, and the world, to have.
