His Truth Will Triumph

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us: the Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, one little word shall fell him – Verse 3 of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

Continuing in our series of reflections by Rayshawn Graves on the individual verses of Martin Luther’s A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, here is verse 3:

This verse highlights the absolute sovereignty of God over the devil and the powers of darkness. The devil, who is the god of this world, is actively at work seeking to undo us and destroy our faith. His threats against us are aimed to cause us to fear, doubt, worry, and reject God. On our own we fail to match up against the Prince of Darkness, and left to ourselves we are unable to endure his attacks, but when we run to our Mighty Fortress in Christ, we will be joyfully made to see that this roaring lion who seeks to devour the souls of men is chained to a short leash, namely the chain of God’s absolute sovereignty. Our God is not in a dualistic battle of good and evil with the devil. The war that exists between the Sovereign God and the rebellious Prince of Darkness is a war that has already been won. Even when Satan’s attacks against God’s people seem most overwhelming, God is already victorious, and He has willed His truth to triumph through us.

The truth is that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, no one in heaven or earth can bring a charge against those who God has justified and chosen, and the work that God has begun in His people, He will bring it to completion. The truth is that all things were made by Him, through Him, and for Him, for His glory; and as Luther stated “even the devil is God’s ape.” This means that even Satan is within the realm of God’s absolute control, serving His ultimate purposes. Nothing that the devil does against us is beyond the ordination and permission of our loving and merciful God, who works all things for His glory and our good. For this reason, we don’t tremble at the devil, because He is not independent of our Lord’s authority; and although the devil could be done away with by God’s power instantaneously, the Lord has appointed a day in which his doom is sure – God, with the same powerful word that created the world and calls us to Himself, will command His and our greatest foe to be thrown in everlasting torment forever. Therefore may we have confidence and thanksgiving in our worship because our God triumphs over all devils and darkness effortlessly. Because of His sovereignty, we have a mighty fortress in Christ who will enable us to stand and endure fearlessly through any attacks of our enemy.
