Psalm 126

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb! Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. – Psalm 126:1-6

This Lenten season, Redemption Hill will be looking at the Psalms of Ascent (Psalm 120-134) during our Sunday gatherings; and one of our desires is to sing these Psalms together, either through existing songs, or by creating our own melody around the text. This Sunday, we will be introducing Psalm 126 by Bifrost Arts, which is off their album He Will Not Cry Out: Anthology of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Volume 2. This particular Psalm tells of a people who were laughing, full of joy, and who thought they were dreaming because the Lord had done such wonderful things for them. The goodness of God was proclaimed among them, and declared among the nations. But the author of this Psalm proclaims that this joy did not come without tears, brokenness, or desperation. The harvest came forth after the seed was sown with weeping. It paints a beautiful picture of one who is overwhelmingly grateful for a harvest; he is walking away with sheaves stacked so high that he can barely see where he is going. He can’t stop rejoicing and singing songs of praise. He is not patting himself on the back. He has toiled and wept, and is now completely beside himself in love with a generous Provider. Here are the lyrics to the song:

Our mouths they were filled, filled with laughter;
Our tongues they were loosed, loosed with joy.
Restore us, O Lord!
Restore us, O Lord!

Although we are weeping, Lord, help us keep sowing
The seeds of Your Kingdom for the day You will reap them!
Your sheaves we will carry; Lord, please do not tarry!
All those who sow weeping will come home with songs of joy!

The nations will say, “He has done great things!”
The nations will sing songs of joy.
Restore us, O Lord!
Restore us, O Lord!

I pray that during this season, we would see this Psalm as a foreshadow of the coming Christ who was the seed, sown by His weeping Father, that had to die and fall to the earth in order to bring life and to bring a harvest that would never perish. I pray that with thanksgiving and praise, we would lift our voices to God, for He has done great things for us in Jesus Christ. He has brought us out of captivity to sin, and is leading us to a heavenly Zion. He has forgiven our sins and made peace with us through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son Jesus. He has sent his Spirit to conform us into the likeness of Jesus, and has given us His Word to instruct us in how to live. God has done great things for us!

Simply incredible song. So powerfully captures the sorrow and hope in Psalm 126.
