And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. – Mark 16:5-6

How much larger your life would be if your self could become smaller in it. – G.K. Chesterton in Orthodoxy

This Sunday we will be introducing another new song to our service called Stronger. It was written by Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan, and is featured on the Hillsong album, This Is Our God.

This song has struck me as of late, because far more than any physical or emotional weakness I have uncovered in myself, there is a weakness to my soul that is more troubling to me. I am daily less than God instructs me to be, and continually miss the mark in what I long to be for Christ. I so want to demonstrate more grace and patience. I grieve the absence of holiness, and the presence of sinful thoughts. Things like revenge, recognition, pride, contentment, bitterness, control, and other stuff I am not supposed to be struggling with, I do. Granted, not as much as I used to, but it is still there. Just like every other Christian on the planet, I am growing, and changing, and making progress, but when I look at the goal, then see myself, I am weak. But here’s the good news: Jesus Christ is stronger. Stronger than any fears I have about my future, or any shame I have about my past. Jesus is stronger than my tired and seemingly rehearsed prayers. Stronger than my desire to have any trials I am going through now stopped. Stronger than the enemy who would discourage me with my own failings, and disillusion me with the faults of others.

Grounded in the atoning work of Christ on the cross, and his resurrection, this song reminds me that the grace and love of God, as showcased in Jesus, is stronger than anything that would cause me to doubt or be discouraged. The good news is that because I am weak, I am a prime candidate for the redeeming grace of God. The Bible reminds me that God redeems the weak, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the everyday reminder that I have been graciously received into God’s recovery program for wimps. Here are the lyrics to Stronger:

There is love, that came for us
    Humbled to a sinner’s cross
You broke my shame and sinfulness
    You rose again victorious

    Faithfulness none can deny
Through the storm and through the fire
There is truth that sets me free
Jesus Christ who lives in me

You are stronger, you are stronger
Sin is broken, you have saved me
It is written, Christ is risen
Jesus you are Lord of all

    No beginning and no end
You’re my hope and my defense
You came to seek and save the lost
You paid it all upon the cross

So let your name be lifted higher
Be lifted higher, be lifted higher

I thank God for the blessed freedom the gospel brings, good news which reminds me everyday that God is God and I am not; that in the person of Jesus Christ, God has already secured for me what I could never secure for myself in my weakness. Jesus Christ is indeed stronger. I have posted a live video of the song below so that you can become familiar with it, and you can purchase a copy of it by clicking here.
