What I’m Reading This Summer with Rayshawn Graves

Continuing with our What I’m Reading This Summer series, today we hear from Rayshawn Graves. Three books Rayshawn is reading this summer are:

Transforming Grace: Living Confidently in God’s Unfailing Love by Jerry Bridges
I love this book because Bridges explains the grace of God in such a clear and pastoral way. The first few chapters in this book are worth re-reading several times over just for a better understanding of the unmerited, undeserved grace of God upon sinners. He also explains how the grace of God looks in the life of a believer, freeing us from legalism, enabling us to obey God without the worry of failure or condemnation, and how to live with contentment in life because of the riches of God’s grace.

The Mortification of Sin by John Owen
Following in the example of my dear brother, Demetrius, I try to read this book at least once a year. John Owen’s 130 page work about “killing sin before sin kills you” is so straightforward and cutting to the heart. This book is good in informing the believer what mortification is not, and it causes the reader to ask honest questions about themselves concerning their sin.

Bloodlines: Race, Cross, and the Christian by John Piper
Piper’s book on Race, the Cross, and the Christian, is great in that it takes the gospel and the doctrines of God’s grace and shows how they speak to race and race relations in the church. Piper addresses historical and present events that have occured in this country dealing with race, and seeks to show how the gospel points to the day where Jesus returns for His multi-ethnic bride and where people from every tribe, nation, and people group, will worship before the throne of God forever.

Rayshawn is a member of Redemption Hill Church in Richmond, Virginia, and has been married to his wife Tiffany for four years. In his free time he enjoys watching Bernie Mac Episodes on Netflix, analyzing the NBA (yelling at the TV), and writing at Adjust My Thoughts. When he’s not counting down the days till the new Air Jordan’s come out, he and his wife can be found in the Glen Allen Community of Redemption Hill.
