Where I am vs. Where I’m Supposed to Be

Here’s where I’m supposed to be right now.

The Acts29 Network graciously provides a 3 day retreat in Vail, CO for all lead pastors each summer. Did I mention that they “provide” the retreat (read “pay for”)? Last year it was an amazing experience for Erin and I to be with great friends and fellow planters in the Rockies. It was the perfect “reset” button for us. We have looked forward to this trip for 12 months.

However, our precious baby girl decided to make a fashionably late arrival and in the end we weren’t comfortable schlepping a 2 week old to the Rockies…some 9,000ft high and risking her having any breathing complications just so that we could be there.

Instead of that, here’s where I am today.

They’re not quite the same…yet, when it comes down to it, there is no place I’d rather be. You see, this morning I was able to go up to Holton Elementary and clean the rooms where our kids have class on Sunday. Instead of fancy brunches in the mountains, I had mops and industrial cleaners.

But as I cleaned room after room, I was reminded of just how gracious God is and has been to us as a church. I began to pray for the kids and the teachers that are and will be in each of these rooms. I was moved to tears as I thought about the eternal seeds that are being planted in these classrooms.

Clean mountain air has nothing on the time I spent at Holton today.

Beautiful hikes in the Rocky Mountains don’t hold a candle to the priceless moments that I have had with my baby girl at home.

Instead of being distracted by a crowd, I’ve been able to relish all the precious moments of life with a 3 week old that I never had the opportunity to experience with our son Owen before he passed away.

So, in the end, maybe I’m not where I had planned on being this week…but I’m pretty sure I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
