2 John 1:4-6
Sermon Audio

This sermon on 2 John 1:4-6 was preached by Raymond Goodlett at the 10:30 a.m. service of Redemption Hill Church on January 20th, 2019.

We are reminded in 2 John 1:4-6 that God has made it possible to walk after him in truth. That God rejoices over his children and that we can rejoice because of the work that he is doing in their lives and that God has not only called us to love but has defined for us what that love is. We hope that this will help you this week as you spend time in personal reflection, talking with family, or discussing with friends or your community.

Read

2 John 1:4–6
4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.

Reflect

1. “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth”

  • Does it bring you joy to hear that others are walking in the truth of God?
  • What prevents you from rejoicing greatly that others are following after Christ?
  • How does remembering what Christ has done for you increase your joy for others?

2. “Walking in the truth”
Sometimes our lives as Christians is described as a race and other times as walking but the real hope is that we are progressing/moving towards becoming more like Christ.

  • Where do you need to make progress in your life right now?
  • How can you take steps to become more consistent in that “everyday faithfulness” that we have been called to?
  • How can we encourage each other towards “walking in the truth”?

3. “This is love, that we walk according to his commandments”

  • How have you defined for yourself what love is?
  • Where do you struggle to see God’s commandments as truly loving?
  • How does the gospel shape our understanding of love and also of God’s commandments?

Respond

Spend time this week reflecting on how the goodness of God produces in us the desire and ability to “walk in the truth”. Ask God to open your eyes to be able to see the beauty of his commandments and the love that he produces in us. And share with someone the joy that you have at seeing them “walking in the truth”.
