2 John 1:7-13
Sermon Audio

This sermon on 2 John 1:7-13 was preached by Raymond Goodlett at the 9:30 a.m. service of Redemption Hill Church on January 27th, 2019.

We are reminded in 2 John 1:7-13 that to follow after Christ means to abide, treasure and obey his teachings. We must be aware, and on guard, against any teaching that would lead us from treasuring the truth about who Christ is and what he has done for us. We hope that this will help you this week as you spend time in personal reflection, talking with family, or discussing with friends or your community.

2 John 1:7-13
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works. 12 Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

7. “For many deceivers have gone out into the world”

  • How do false teachers entice others?
  • What are the things of this world (money, status, comfort, etc.) that appeal to you most?
  • Are there areas where you are following these desires more than Christ?
  • How is the gospel more beautiful and powerful than those things?

8. “Watch yourselves”

  • Are there any truths from the Bible that you are struggling to treasure, obey and abide in right now? What are they and why?
  • How can we encourage and exhort those around us that might be led away by deceivers?

9. “Whoever abides in the teaching (of Christ) has both the Father and the Son.”

  • Is this an encouraging truth to you? Why or why not?
  • What does it look like to abide in the teaching of Christ?
  • What has God done to make this possible?
  • What practical steps can you take to help make this more a reality in your life?

Spend time this week reflecting on how it is only through the cross of Christ that we can abide in Christ and abide in his teaching. If there is a truth about Christ that you are struggling to believe, confess that to God and to a trusted friend or church member and ask for help in your unbelief. Ask God to help you see his teaching as glorious, lovely, and vital to your life.
