Is He Worthy?

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” – Revelation 5:12

This Sunday, we will be introducing a new song to our gathering, Is He Worthy by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive, featured on the album Resurrection Letters, Volume 1. Based on John’s vision in Revelation, this call and response song asks many important questions, but the one it keeps coming back to is found in Revelation 5:2: “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?”

In order to fully grasp what is being asked here, let’s pose the question a little differently: “Who is able to purge wickedness from the earth with perfect justice and reign over the nations in righteousness forever?” This is what is being asked here, and John weeps at the apparent hopelessness of ever finding someone who could be capable of this. But there is one who can do these things. Only one. He is the Lion of Judah. He conquered the grave. He is David’s Root (a descendant). He is the Lamb who was slain in ransom for us, who were slaves to sin. He is Jesus.

When Jesus takes the scroll, voices of angels numbering ten thousand times ten thousand began to worship him. The four living creatures (the worship leaders of heaven) and all the angels sing, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

No one other than Jesus could save us. No one other than Jesus could bring peace and justice to the earth. No one other than Jesus deserves our praise. So the main question we all must answer is: Is He worthy? He is.

Here are the lyrics:

Do you feel the world is broken? We do.
Do you feel the shadows deepen? We do.
But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through? We do.
Do you wish that you could see it all made new? We do.

Is all creation groaning? It is.
Is a new creation coming? It is.
Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? It is.
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? It is.

Does the Father truly love us? He does.
Does the Spirit move among us? He does.
And does Jesus, our Messiah, hold forever those He loves? He does.
Does our God intend to dwell again with us? He does.

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David’s root, and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave.
From every people and tribe; every nation and tongue
He has made us a kingdom and priests to God to reign with the Son
Is He worthy? Is He worthy of all blessing and honor and glory?
Is He worthy? Is He worthy? Is He worthy of this? He is.

As we look around at the brokenness and darkness in this world that seems to be growing day be day, our prayer is that this song will remind us of the glory, power, wisdom, and goodness of our triune God, the salvation He accomplished, and the promise that He is making all things new. Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? It is.
