Over the last 20 years, I have heard numerous messages on James 2:14-26 which attempted to resolve the apparent contradiction between the cherished doctrine of salvation through faith alone apart from works (Ephesians 2:8-9) and what James says about being “justified by works and not by faith alone” (James 2:24). That includes messages from preachers as reputable as John Piper and Alaister Begg. I have read numerous commentaries from others, including from men like Douglas Moo. I have made my own attempts to clarify this passage for others. So, I don’t say this lightly…
