Let Goods and Kindred Go

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. – Verse 4 of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

Concluding our series of reflections by Rayshawn Graves on the individual verses of Martin Luther’s A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, here is verse 4:

The final verse of A Mighty Fortress is Our God resounds with many powerful truths. It begins with the Word who is above all earthly powers, who is Christ. He is, from the last verse, the “little Word” that brings the Prince of Darkness to destruction. He is the Word that upholds the universe, and created the world by His power; and He is the Word which abides in His people, giving them life, strength, and assurance when the nations rage, and the kings of the earth set themselves against the Lord. It is because God’s Word abides in us and dwells with us that we can have confidence and be fearless in the face of persecution and afflictions. In addition to the abiding Word of God, we also have the Spirit of God who sides with us because of the Grace of God lavishly bestowed upon us. The Spirit of God freely sides with us in Christ, and He freely gives gifts to us which serve to glorify God, and further proclaim His excellence to the world. With both the Word of God and Spirit of God, siding with us, and abiding in us, we can say like Romans 8:31 “ If God is for us, who can be against us?” God is our mighty fortress and refuge of strength and therefore nothing can destroy us when we are in Him.

The next part of this verse is an exhortation to wholly depend on the everlasting kingdom of our God. With an all powerful God on our side, we can place our security in Him, letting go of the security that we place in other things such as our earthly goods, our relationships, and even our own lives. Satan will come after all of these things, but if our hope and trust is in Christ, he may kill our body, take our goods, and even sever our relationships, but God’s truth will still abide. Jesus has conquered sin, death, and every demonic attack that comes against those who trust in Him, and He will establish His kingdom forever, and His enemies will be found destroyed by His power. His truth is never thwarted and we will never be separated from Him, because God is our Mighty Fortress, our refuge and very present help in trouble.
