Romans 8:2-4
Sermon Audio

This sermon on Romans 8:2-4 was preached by Robert Greene at the 10:30 a.m. service of Redemption Hill Church on April 28th, 2019.

We were reminded this week from Romans 8:2-4 that for those that hope and trust in Christ that we have been set free from the power of sin and all the condemnation that comes with it. This is for your good and God’s glory! We would encourage you to consider reading and memorizing the entire chapter of Romans 8 during the month of May. Our hope is that this will help you remember and reflect on all that God has done for you in Christ and give you the joy and power to turn away from sin, guilt and shame and turn to Christ.

Read

Romans 8:2-4
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Reflect

I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? – Romans 7:23-24

The depth of sin’s indwelling power. Indwelling sin was in Paul’s life and is in our life as well. It is present and powerful and is trying to smother Christ out!

  • What sins are you currently trying to work yourself free from?
  • Have you been hesitant to confess that sin to others? Why?
  • Who could you confess that sin to this week?

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. – Romans 8:3

Our instinct when confronted by our sin, is to try and fix what we’ve done by our own own will power, by working harder.

  • Why is it difficult to admit that we can’t save ourselves from sin?
  • How have you tried to fix or save yourself recently instead of instead of trusting in the sacrifice of Christ?

For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus. – Romans 8:2

What gets my heart out of this mess? It’s seeing Jesus and what he has done in his life, death and intercession on our behalf.

  • Where have you seen freedom from sin when you set your eyes on Christ and what he’s done for you?
  • How would trusting in the work of Christ change your efforts against sin?
  • How can you remind yourself to trust in the work that Christ has done to set you free?  Who else should you remind this week?

Respond

Spend time this week being honest with God about your sin and your efforts to save yourself. Confess your sins honestly and openly to your community, or a brother or sister in Christ and share stories of victory that you have sin over sin. Take time to thank God for the perfect obedience of Christ and how that now frees you from the power of sin. And consider memorizing all of Romans Chapter 8 so you can more consistently be reminded of the work of Christ in your life.
